A Journey Rooted in Faith ━━
Our Beginning
The dispensary began its journey at Gurdwara Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib, Sector 34-D, Chandigarh, through the selfless initiative and lifelong commitment of Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh and Late Dr Savitri R. Singh.
With no funding, no staff, and no infrastructure, they started an evening OPD to serve those who worked all day and had nowhere to go for medical help—labourers, domestic workers, rickshaw pullers, daily-wage earners, and the urban poor.
The earliest setup was minimal—a table, a chair, basic medicines, and immense faith. Injections were administered in unfinished rooms and under-construction spaces, yet the resolve to serve never weakened. The dispensary grew not through money, but through trust, consistency, and devotion to seva.
Our Philosophy
• No discrimination is made on the basis of religion, caste, gender, or financial status
• No preference is given—every patient is treated equally
Healthcare here is not transactional—it is spiritual, ethical, and humane. The dispensary believes that true healing begins with compassion, and medicine is only one part of that process.
━━ What Defines Us ━━
Free Medicine and Consultation
All consultations, medical advice, and medicines are provided free of charge. Subsidized medical investigation and paramedical care.
Commitment To Seva
The dispensary is run primarily by volunteers—Consultants, experienced paramedics, and support staff.
Evening OPD for the Working Poor
Understanding the realities of daily-wage earners, services are offered in the evening, when patients are free from work and able to avail the medical services.
━━ Our Guiding Light ━━
Bhai Ghanaiya Ji
When a complaint was made to *Guru Gobind Singh Ji* questioning why he served all without discrimination, Bhai Ghanaiya Ji replied with humility that he saw *only Guru Nanak in every injured being. Deeply moved, Guru Sahib embraced him and instructed that he should not only offer water, but also dress wounds and give medicine to all, regardless of which side they fought for—thus sanctifying medical care itself as a form of sacred *seva.
This living philosophy continues at Bhai Ghanaiya Dispensary today. Patients are treated solely on the basis of need, without judgment, fees, or discrimination. Every individual is treated with dignity, compassion, and respect, making the dispensary not just a place of treatment, but a continuation of Bhai Ghanaiya Ji’s philosophy of timeless service to humanity.

Dr SPS Oberoi
Dr S.P.S. Oberoi once visited to attend the Anand Karaj (marriage) of a relative at Gurdwara Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib, Sector 34, Chandigarh. He went around the Bhai Ghanaiya Dispensary and was inspired to see the voluntary services being rendered by specialists in various medical disciplines, including Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology (ENT), Ayurveda, and Homoeopathy, besides Dentistry (dental services by BDS and MDS doctors), Obstetrics, and Paediatrics. The medicines are being dispensed to all the patients free of charge.
Facilities of X-ray, laboratory, and physiotherapy are also available. All these services are being provided since 1990s. A philanthropist and humanitarian, Dr S.P.S. Oberoi, Managing Director of Sarbat Da Bhala Trust, inspired by the health services provided by the dispensary at the Gurdwara, offered to take over Radiology, Dental, Laboratory, and Physiotherapy services.
The Sarbat Da Bhala Trust donated digital X-ray machine, new set of dental chairs, gadgets and other articles required for the health facilities, after being purchased, to the dispensary. These health services are being run since June 2022 at charitable rates.
